November shows

This Wednesday I’m very much looking forward to Voicehandler reprising the live score to Kerry Laitala’s performance cinema work The City Luminous: Electric Salome. Check out this great documentation of a performance at ATA last year:

Wed, Nov 9. 8:00 PM Gray Area [2665 Mission St. SF]
Perpetual Motion, Program Five: Spectres
Kerry Laitala + Voicehandler / Raha Raissnia + Panagiotis Mavridis / John Davis

In evoking liminal states of consciousness through the use of custom-made screens, elaborate projection arrays and multi-planed, layered imagery, the works on this program explore imagined histories, the nature of memories, literal and metaphoric travel and motion. Kerry Laitala’s THE CITY LUMINOUS: ELECTRIC SALOME (with live soundtrack by Voicehandler) celebrates the groundbreaking light/costume/dance innovations of Loie Fuller (1862–1928) as a progenitor of Performance Cinema itself while imagining the fantastical Panama Pacific International Exhibition presented in San Francisco in 1915.

Later in November, my two recurring series:

Tue 11/15 8:30 PM Uptown Nightclub [1928 Telegraph Ave Oakland]
Active Music Series presents:
    •    LAZARUS WALKS: Tim DeCillis, Alex Cohen, Tom Weeks;
    •    BARBEDWIRE: Phillip Greenlief, Gabby Fluke-Mogul, Evelyn Davis;

Sun 11/20 7:30 PM Temescal Arts Center [511 48th Street Oakland]

I’ve been putting a lot of new material up on my Soundcloud page. Long-form free improvisation with Tom Djll, John McCowen, Kanoko Nishi-Smith, Jay Korber, Mark Small, and Marshall Trammell.

Rolling Stone's 14th best avant album of 2015

Bill Orcutt and Jacob Felix Heule, 'Colonial Donuts'

A set of 13 brief, visceral, blurt-sized improv sets that puts the "primal" in "American primitive." Until 1997, Bill Orcutt made explosive, full-body-orgasm noise-rock in Harry Pussy and, 20 years later, re-emerged as an acoustic, scissor-fingered blues shredder. This duet with Bay Area drum splatterer Jacob Felix Heule splits the difference between the two eras: It's an explosive, high-energy collaboration that's as close to Delta Blues as Lightning Bolt.
